Producer/engineer/musician

Sound engineer Matthew McGaun has been a professional guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer for over 20 years. He has learnt his craft as a studio engineer whilst working as an assistant in studios he has recorded and produced in over the years. His main stays were in Central Queensland where he produced bands as an assistant solely to a tape machine. Also in Melbourne and Byron Bay where he worked on a lot of blues and melodic rock productions.

Matthew has a background in orchestral and classical instruments with his own training during his high school years in brass instruments as well as piano and violin. He went on from there to learn guitar from a close friend and played along to the gentle (haha) riffs of Metallica and Pearl Jam. Jimi Hendrix was his biggest inflluence as a guitarist and he has learnt from tablature note for note many Hendrix classics.

Starting his love of tracking bands and otherworldy synth sounds he used the Boss BR532. This unit is a great little product which has been updated and a a bit overtaken in the home 4 track digital recorder market.

“It is a beautiful little unit that is portable with some nice preamps capable of really great demos for bands” states Matthew.

His sandisks of all of his old sessions were lost in transit and included lots of his own early work and bands he worked with in his home town. Live and learn. From then he was involved in a studio that was solely recording, editing and mixing straight to tape. From these studio sessions he has taken a love to committing to tape and making spur of the moment decisions that cannot be removed. A far cry from todays digital realm. The Zoom R16 was his next portable unit for recording bands. These early days with minimal gear and budgets have taught Matthew some valuable lessons in reaching that final mix for release on the global market.

From the stage to the studio Matthew found he loved recording and mixing then further into mastering. Also working with friends and local artists to reach their goals as musicians and fellow creatives. He has grown fond of creating sound design and sample based music with synthesizer leads and pads to bring a new era and evolution to his musical interest. He has his own indie blues rock band Dadi Kinwa and is also the founding producer and song writer for the ambient synth project The Jasmine Club. He loves performing live on stage and getting the sound right live.

His goal as an engineer is to provide a professional tailored service to each client and is known for his endeavour to work closely with artists through every stage of production. This starts with song writing ideas all the way through to mastering and cd/digital distribution. He loves getting creative in the studio with a strong emphasis on experimenting with gear and sounds. He loves mixing big crunchy distorted drums and clear punchy vocals. His main influences and interests in music production are blues rock, guitar based music, synth music, hip hop, world music, acoustic, and progressive rock. “Nothing is out of reach with a little care and patience”. He also has a growing interest in pop and RnB.

Matthew is great at photography and film making for any project you may have. Check his portfolio here at Dusky Finch
